Course Content

Teaching of the “Sanskrit commentary of Adi Sankaracharya for every sloka of Sri Vishnu Sahasra Nama Stotra,” with meaning in Sanskrit and Telugu.

Origin of Sri Vishnu Sahasra Nama Stotra: After the Mahabharata war, Dharmaraja was highly disturbed because of the colossal loss of lives during the battle, He started owning the responsibility of killing millions of soldiers, horses, elephants, and also his teachers like Drona, brother Karna, respected kings like Drupada, children like Abhimanyu and Upapandavas, etc.

He went to the extremity of not agreeing to the coronation of the kingdom. After soothening of his feelings by several great sages, and on the advice of Lord Krishna, Dharmaraja approaches Bhishmacharya who was on a bed of arrows, to seek clarifications on various aspects of life, Dharma, philosophy, education, social customs, righteous activities, etc to be upheld by the kings.

In that discourse, Dharmaraja posed a set of six questions to Bhishma, , which have subsequently became very popular in the context of Indian minds. Bhishma states that all the six questions have answers in a single text, called Sri Vishnu Sahasra nama stotra. As part of it, he narrates 1000 divine names of Lord Vishnu.

Sri Adi Sankaracharya picked up that text of conversation between Dharmaraja and Bhishma, from Anusasana Parva of Mahabharata, written by Sage Veda Vyasa. The Acharya wrote an elaborate commentary, throwing light on several aspects of each word.

They include the grammatical formation of that word, etymology, its physical and divine meanings, its philosophical connotations, references from various branches of Vedas, Upanishads, Brahmasutras, Puranas, Smritis, Dharma Sastras, and several other holy texts which are never heard and unknown to even erudite scholars.

Briefly it can be stated that Sri Sankaracharya’s commentary is an encyclopedia of ancient Indian traditional knowledge.

With a view to have a comprehensive understanding of the above, it was planned to have a detailed teaching of Sri Sankaracharya’s commentary.Participants who are desirous of joining the course are requested to contact Shri Veda Bharathi
