About Lilavati Ganitam

Shri Veda Bharathi (SVB) has been conducting several On-line courses on various subjects for the past few years, as part of its objectives of Preservation and Propagation of Vedic wisdom. For making the students of modern education to understand the great contributions of Ancient mathematicians of India, SVB started "Lilavati Ganitam-Part 1" (ZOOM classes ) in May, 2020, and completed in May, 2021. In continuation of the same, now it is proposed to take up"Lilavati Ganitam-Part 2", with the following details. Individuals who are interested in joining the course can register below.

Outcome Expected

It is hoped that this course detailing the mathematical excellence in ancient India creates a sense of pride among the teachers and students ,and revives the mathematical spirit among the modern youth to pursue the matter with more vigor and energy. Imbibed and practiced from childhood onwards, this will eliminate the phobia against mathematics and will find improvement in the performance of students in the class rooms and in the competitive examinations.

Course Content

Lilavati Ganitam represents the mathematical genius of ancient India. It contains several super fast mathematical techniques useful for competitive examinations. More than all, it captivates the students through its unique style of beautiful presentation of mathematical problems and solutions, through pleasant events observed in the nature .The text runs with stanzas composed in poetic style in lucid Sanskrit. In addition to learning mathematics, it improves the Sanskrit learning of the readers, and provides a view of ancient India.

The interesting aspect of this book is that the commentary was also written by the same author, in a prose form, explaining each step of the mathematical process given in his stanzas.

It starts with the description of the number systems, and weights and measures popular in India about 1000 years back. Then it gives the methods of eight modes of arithmetic operations, viz., addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, square, square root, cube and cube roots.

It extends the arithmetic operations to fractions, processing of LCM and HCF, continued fractions, decimal arithmetics, ratios and proportions, finding the values of unknowns, solving simultaneous equations, progressions, geometry, calculation of simple interest and compound interest, analysis of similar triangles, constructions of quadrilaterals, circles, conversions of geometrical figures from one form to the other for the same area values, etc.

Participants who are desirous of joining the course are requested to contact Shri Veda Bharathi.
